Violin Goes For $1.2 Million

A violin made by legendary 18th century Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari was sold at auction in New York for $1.2 million. The violin, known as "The Penny" after its previous owner, English violinist Barbara Penny, who died last year, was expected to reach between $1 million and 1.5 million at the Chtistie's auction.
Stradivari worked in Cremona, Italy making harps and guitars as well as violins until he died in 1737. He is believed to have made more that 1100 instruments, of which some 650 have been preserved.
